'SALT OF THE EARTH'
Inspired by the work of Vik Muniz (1996 "Sugar Children"), this portrait was created by Martin Osner, by overlaying salt crystals onto a charcoal image transfer. The thickness of the coarse sea salt has been altered by the artist to bring out shadow and highlight depth in the portrait. Two paragraphs of Mandela's famous speech which he gave at the Rivonia trial where he was tried for treason, are inscribed below the print.

'Valley of Ochre'
Poem by Craig O’Flaherty (2022)
Seasons change
as elegant Egrets
circle a misted sky.
They’re wisps of white
smoke above Autumn’s
ochre trees.
Flamed wooden torch trees,
that burn the clutter
of noise away.
It’s a moment when
I step into a mystery –
beyond the ordinary.
When here is now
and the past long gone,
with the future yet to be.
Their diminishing circles
arc closer to those
rusted tree tops.
That flight is my freedom,
to a landscape of
inner simplicity.
